Chapter 11

Beck and Dawson wandered over to speak to a mutual friend, and Shelby and I became involved in a discussion relating to the various ways in which we could approach the subject of Miranda’s fate when Georgia appeared on the makeshift stage with a microphone in hand and announced that the judging would begin. Fifteen teams had entered the contest. I recognized at least one member of most of the teams, although there were a couple of teams from neighboring towns who I’d yet to have an opportunity to chat with.

“Who is the judge wearing the purple skirt?” I asked Shelby. “I recognize everyone else, but she doesn’t look familiar.”

“Her name is Laverne Halviston,” Shelby answered. “I haven’t personally met her, but Amy has spoken to her a few times. According to Amy, Laverne’s the new chef at Jaspers on the Bay. Amy said that while she seems nice, she didn’t get a longevity vibe.”

“I thought I heard you had a friend you were considering.”

“I did have someone in mind, but she no longer lives at the last address I have for her, and she seems to have disappeared. I suppose that happens at times. By this point, I plan to move on and hope the perfect candidate falls into my lap.”

“Eden told me that Alice Farthington is considering returning to Holiday Bay.”

“Alice Farthington, as in book club Alice Farthington?” Shelby asked.

I nodded. “I haven’t spoken to Alice personally, but Eden has been corresponding with her ever since she made the decision to quit her job and move closer to her family following the death of her husband. Apparently, Alice has come to regret her decision. She shared with Eden that trying to continue with the routines that had made up her everyday life felt unmanageable in those first months after the death of her husband. She’d been a twenty-two-year-old with big dreams when she and her husband moved to the area, but after his death, Alice realized that the dream that had brought her to the area had died with the man she loved. Eden shared with
